Bad news. Remember 99-cent gallons of gas? Forget it. It looks like $3.00/gal or more is about to become the staple for awhile. Unfortunately, the heartless witch Katarina decided to take out some key refineries and oil import terminals.
Of course this will have an adverse reaction in the price of gas. What can we do about it? Well, there are some obvious choices:
- Reduce unneeded recreational travel
- Carpool
- Buy gas-efficient automobiles
- Look for alternate means of travel such as train, subway, etc.
However, if you are reading this, chances are you don’t live in a heavily-populated metro area and are quite dependent on your car or truck for your commute to work. For those of you, like me, there exist websites where we can share published gas prices to make smarter choices at the pump. For those of us in Illinois, Illinois Gas Prices is a good website that you can use to find cheap gas in your area. For instance, I use a search to find gas stations in Peoria that have reported the lowest prices in the last 4 hours.
There exists many websites that track this information for other areas of the country as well. The most well known is probably Gas Buddy. It keeps a pretty large database for all metro areas, and there is a Googlemaps implementation of this at Cheapgas.

It’s getting bad out there, both carolinas are running out of gas.
Yesterday on the way to work I noticed gas prices had gone up 20 cents from the day before. Today they were up another 10 cents from that.
Luckily I filled up a few days ago, hopefully it will stabalize.

I hope it stabilizes as well. I’ve got about 5 days left on this tank for my car, and Rhya’s is empty.
Fortunately, it looks that Bush has opened up some of the emergency oil reserves.
