I use them to balance tables

Filed under: Books, matt, Memes — mattandrhya @ 12:02 pm

I’m sure glad I get to follow up Rhya’s novel about books. Josh tagged me, so here is my attempt at answering (though I’m pretty sure it will firmly shut me out of all book-related meme tagging).

Also, I’m just going to stick to adult books, or else I’d have to put “Catcher with a Glass Arm” as an answer to too many of these. Plus, I’m calling it right now: I’m not going to answer with the Bible, because I’d use it for more than one. There, now on with it:

1. One book that changed your life? Bat*21, which I just recently discovered is not Catch 22. I’ve had it in my mind for at leas 15 years that I loved the book Catch 22. Nope, Bat*21. Talk about struggle and heroism.

2. One book you have read more than once? – I really don’t do this. It ranks right up there with watching old movies. But I’ll probably read Angels and Demons again sometime.

3. One book you would want on a desert island? Probably the biggest Choose Your Own Adventure book ever. And it would preferably be so big that I could use it as a raft.

4. One book that made you laugh? The Great American Novel by Keith Malley. This is the guy from the Keith and the Girl podcast. It was a pretty good size e-book that used to be online, but now he is going to edit it and try to actually publish it. This guy’s life was crazy.

5. One book that made you cry? I’m not sure I actively cried, but I remember how sad I was during a couple parts of Friday Night Lights.

6. One book you wish had been written? A biography of my Dad’s life. His stories are awesome.

7. One book you wish had never been written? Take your pick: Digital Fortress or Deception Point – both by Dan Brown. How can the same guy write a book like Angels and Demons and these two pieces of garbage?

8. One book you are currently reading? Does Maxim count? ’cause some of those stories are pretty long. No, seriously, I just don’t take the time for it anymore. The longest book I’ve read in a while is the Cat Product Catalog to Macullen or Animals on the Farm to Lindy.

9. One book you have been meaning to read? Catch 22 until I figured out it wasn’t Bat*21. But I’ve also been wanting to read Lullaby by Chuck Pahluniuk.

10. Now tag five people: Tammy, Rachel, Bennett, Jo, Chip, Lea, JP…

Ahhh…books : )

Filed under: Books, Memes, Rhya — mattandrhya @ 12:13 am

I love books and my friend Kim just tagged me with this questionaire:

1)  One book that changed your life?  I have two:  The first book I learned to read was “I am a Puppy” by Ole Risom.  I remember my mom read it to me so many times that when she asked me to try to read it to her, I could “read” it because I had memorized it.  This worked for about two seconds until she started asking me to read specific words out of order.  The first ‘big girl’ chapter book I ever read without assistance was “The Ringmaster’s Secret” (a Nancy Drew mystery) by Carolyn Keene.  I was seven years old and my mom had just bought me a bag of books at a garage sale.  She brought them home and I picked that one because I liked the picture on the cover and I wanted to know what the secret was.  My mom explained that this book was for older kids and encouraged me to pick a picture book instead.  Well, that was all she needed to say because I decided I was going to prove it to her that I could to read it!  I had to ask  her what about fifty different words meant and it took me forever to get through it, but I did it and I was SO proud of myself.  I took off devouring books and never looked back.  Sidenote:  if your kids are reading a book for fun and they come accross a word they don’t know, just tell them what it means.  Dictionaries are not that difficult to figure out after 13 years of school use, and I think interrupting leisure reading with a chore  like dictionary practice discourages a love for reading.

2)  One book you have read more than once?  “Gone with the Wind” by Margaret Mitchell.  This is my favorite book of all time.  I love this book.  I even read “Scarlett” by Alexandria Ripley to try to make the story go on.  Sadly, it was definitely not the same.  Disclaimer:  I know this book catches a lot of fire because of it’s bias and depiction of slavery.  But, I would like to note that it is a work of fiction and it happens to be from the perspective of a very biased fictional character–which in itself can be very interesting and thought provoking.

3)  One book you would want on a deserted island?  Without thinking, I would have said the Bible because of the sheer length, variety of stories, and religious meaning.  But, after reading Kim’s answer of a survival book, I’m thinking I may need to change my answer.  The only survival skills I know are from “Cast Away” and I doubt I would be stranded with an iceskate and a volleyball.

4)  One book that made you laugh?  Any of the Stephanie Plum mysteries by Janet Evanovich.  My sister&mother-in-law turned me on to them and they are hilarious.  Note to Kim:  They are also short (300 pages and large print), pure fun/fluff reading, and can be read with constant distraction due to kids or an odd case of narcolepsy).  In my opinion, she can’t crank these puppies out fast enough–there are currently 12 of them.

5)  One book that made you cry?  Okay, first to mind would be again “Gone With the Wind”, but I won’t say that twice, so instead I will tell you the book that I am most embarassed to have cried about.   Okay, this is actually really embarassing–”Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” by J.K. Rowling.  Don’t worry I’m not the Harry Potter equivalent of a “trekkie” or anything.  I was doing my student teaching for fifth grade and I decided I better know what those Harry Potter books were all about as an informed teacher.  Well, I got hooked and obviously a tad bit over-emotional.

6)  One book that you wish had been written?  I am always thinking of different books to write: some picture books, some mysteries, some autobiographical, some non-fiction.  But, it turns out I am all “talk” and no “action”.  I wish I could/would take the energy/time/motivation to actually write even one of my stories–just to see if I could do it.

7)  One book you wish had never been written?  “Red Dog” by Bill Wallace and “The Call of the Wild” by Jack London.  Now I can’t remember all of the details (I read ‘Red Dog’ in 1991 and ‘The Call of the Wild’ in 1992–both were school assignments) but as an eleven/twelve year old girl with two dogs at home, I remember hating these books so much that I had to strive to block them from my memory.  Obviously, it worked because I can hardly remember what they were about, but I am pretty sure they both included doggie death and I seem to remember one of them had a particularly disturbing scene with intestines being ripped out.  If you know me at all, you know that I love horror movies and I can handle any amount of gore with ease, but I can not stomach (ha ha–puns are funny) any scenes/stories with intestines.  (Incidentally, one movie I wish had never been made: “Braveheart”)

8)  One book you are currently reading?  Two: “Wicked” by Gregory Maguire and “The Rescue” by Nicholas Sparks.  What? No 10 paragraph explanations?

9)  One book you have been meaning to read?  “MEG” by Steve Alten.  Matt recommended it to me and prehistoric sharks sound fun and scary.

10)  Now tag five people: Hmmm…This may prove to be a problem as the only people with blogs (that I know of) are Josh & Kim, who have both taken the survey and Brandon, who is not an avid blog updater : )  But, if I could pick any six people to hear from, it would be my Grandma Sonja, my niece Brooke, my brother-in-law Harry, my friend Katie O, my friend Cheryl, and my mother-in-law Janet.

11)  Name some actual books for adults that you have enjoyed (Okay, I added this question myself after reviewing my responses):  “The Jungle” by Uptain Sinclair is spectacular and gives an eye-opening account of life before the FDA.  Just ignore the socialist diatribe in the last chapter–unless you’re into that sort of thing.  “The Good Earth” by Pearl S. Buck–yes, I read it before it was on Oprah’s book club list.  (Concubines and farming–what more could you ask for?)  And, “A Widow for One Year” by John Irving.  Oh, also, did I mention “Gone With the Wind”?

These Knees Were Made for Crawlin’

Filed under: Family Updates, Lindy — mattandrhya @ 9:55 pm

Seven months has been quite a busy age for our little Lindy. She cut her first tooth and is busy on her second, she pulls herself up to standing, she kneels, she can easily transition from sitting to reaching beyond her feet and getting onto her stomach and now she can officially add crawling to the list! For the last week or so, she had been getting up on all fours and rocking back and forth or spotting a toy and lunging face first at it (without moving her hands forward for support), but on Thursday Lindy took her first few “steps?” by moving two knees and two hands in organized motion.

It is so much fun watching her hone her skills. Lately, she prefers the inchworm-hop method. This is were she gets on all fours and revs her engine by rocking back and forth and then, in a sudden burst of energy, she hops her back legs forward to meet her hands and then re-stretches out on her belly, gets back up on all fours, and repeat. Now the trick to getting Lindy to crawl is finding the correct motivation. You may be thinking a soft cuddly teddybear or a musical toy, but you’d be wrong. What she really goes after are things she is not normally allowed to have. Her favorite targets are nice cold cans of Diet Coke, car keys, and cell phones–then she’ll really get moving!

Forward Thinking

Filed under: Building, Home — mattandrhya @ 8:57 am

I spent some time over the last week trying to brainstorm things that we need to do to prepare to build a house. I remember moving into our current house and trying to figure out how we could fit our stuff into someone else’s construction. Most of the time, we just had to “make do” because it would be too hard to change the house.

However, we are in a unique position in that we can dictate what shelves, wires, and walls need to be put where, and I think that is going to take a lot of planning to work through. Even though we aren’t going to have the money to buy all of the things that I want to put into the house (home theater, indoor/outdoor sound system, alarm, some type of voip, etc.), I need to start planning how all of the wiring, electrical, etc. would need to lay out to support it all.

I’ll let you know how it goes, but right now, this is what I have in my brain:

  • Home Theater (downstairs) – no planning needed right now as we aren’t finishing the basement yet
  • Indoor/Outdoor Sound – I pretty much know exactly the setup that I want, so I’ll just have to plan to run the specific grade of wire between the living room and the back porch. I’ll probably put an AirTunes receiver in the living room to feed both indoor and outdoor sound. I just need to figure out how I’m going to solve volume from the porch. I may run an infrared repeater from the porch to the living room where the receiver will be. I just know that we’ll want to pick songs and volume from the porch without heading inside.
  • Fire Alarms – I need to figure out where these things are supposed to go. One on each floor and one in the kitchen? Not sure.
  • Land Line – This is where some long-term planning comes into effect. I want to put in a normal telephone system throughout the house. However, instead of attaching it to the outside telephone company, I want the whole thing to attach to some voip system that is dirt cheap – so probably Skype or SIP (Vonage is too expensive for the amount we’ll use it). We’ll never have a landline, but I want to make sure that whoever buys this house can hook up a telephone very easily.
  • Alarm – I know I eventually want to have surveillance and an alarm system, but I know we can’t afford to put in exactly what I want right away, and I still haven’t though out whether I want someone like ADT to monitor it. I’ve got some research to do here, but I think I’ll be able to put in what I want as a wireless system after the fact (the less holes in the wall, the better).

I’m sure there are a ton of things that I’m not thinking of, but you see the tip of the iceberg.

Blueprint Revisions

Filed under: Building, Family Updates, Home — mattandrhya @ 8:02 am

Time for a home-building update. Charlie called us earlier this week and let us know that our blueprints were ready. We set up some time last night to go through them and make sure that they were what we wanted before he started to get detailed bids from his subcontractors.

Of course, we started thinking about it early by looking at the preliminary drawings that we had. We both decided that we weren’t in love with the Victorian look that our exterior has, and we weren’t sure if we would ever sit on a front porch. We decided to drive around a couple neighborhoods and take a look at some exteriors.

First, I just want to say that when we were picking out the plans at the very beginning, we were much more interested in the floorplan, so the exterior kind of fell by the wayside.

Anyway, we drove around a bit, and decided that we really needed to find a way to make the exterior look more modern. Immediately, we started to question whether we really wanted to keep the front porch. As we looked around, we started to like the brick arches over front doors, and also the doors with gables and columns over them.

We went over to Charlie and Amber’s house to look at the plans last night. As we went through the lower level, the upper level, and the basement, we realized that we absolutely love the plans, and this house is going to be amazing. We were both really excited to picture the different rooms and the flow from room to room.

As far as the exterior: we spent about an hour and a half re-drawing it, but I don’t have the drawing skills needed to reproduce it (I’ll put a picture up when it is finalized). For a sneek preview, we added a bunch of hip to the roof, got rid of both of the gables over the dining room, added a gable over the front door, got rid of the porch, extended the laundry room underneath the walk-in closet, and added some brick to the face of the house. It’ll be hard to picture, so I guess you’ll have to wait, but in the meant-time, you can check out some home building glossary terms.

Other comments at this point: The house is bigger than our estimates. I’m not talking The Incredible Hulk huge, but it is a bit Hulk Hogan huge. Our original drawings pegged the house around 1811 sq. ft., and after we extended the laundry room last night, we ended up around 1982 sq. ft. with a 291 sq. ft. unfinished bonus room upstairs.

I know I said it before, but we LOVE the floorplan. The rooms are big, the closets are big, the stairs are really nicely placed, the pantry is nice, the basement is going to be really awesome (there are zero posts in the middle anywhere in the basement). We’ll be able to put a huge family room, a bar, a guest room, and another bathroom all in the basement when it is finished.

We had a good discussion about budget last night, since the house is about 130 sq. ft. more than we had put into our budget, and we decided to leave everything that we wanted in right now, get new blueprints drawn up, get the detailed bids, and then see where we are. Like I said last night to Charlie. We’re going to build a house, we just need to figure out the right house to build!

Exciting times. We’re getting closer and closer to getting a hole dug in the ground! We’re figuring that it will take a week for the blueprint revisions, and another two weeks to get the detailed bids back. We’re going to the Hofers’ house in KC on the 24th, so hopefully we’ll have some news when we get back!

Lindy’s First Ballgame

At the Chiefs Game

Originally uploaded by mildog.

We had a work outing at the Peoria Chiefs’ Game last night. We were up in the Stadium Club, and it would have been awesome, save the fact that it was about 95 degrees with 100% humidity. Still, Lindy got to wear some Cubs gear, and she absolutely loved the dog mascot that came up and held her.

Word of Mouth

Filed under: Family Updates, Lindy — mattandrhya @ 8:00 am

It’s official – Lindy has her first tooth!  She was up virtually all night on Monday night, so we knew something was up.  Sure enough, Rhya felt a little bump, and we could both see a little line!  It’s her bottom right tooth, and we’ll see if we can snap a picture later.

Blueprints have been picked up!

Filed under: Building, Family Updates, Home — mattandrhya @ 12:12 pm

Charlie let me know that he’s going to pick up our blueprints today!  I had talked to our bank, and they gave us a preliminary nod to go ahead and start getting detailed estimates for the blueprints.

As we are one step closer, I thought I’d throw a map together that has our new neighborhood.  We have NOT bought this lot yet, but it is definitely the frontrunner!
