Home just in time

Filed under: Football, NCAA, Penn State, Sports — mattandrhya @ 6:39 am

I got home just in time to enjoy Penn St. become Big Ten Champions! This means that they will represent the Big Ten in a BCS game (not the Rose Bowl this year since it is the BCS title game).

With that win and Miami’s loss to Georgia Tech, the Nittany Lions jumped to No. 4 in the AP poll.

This trip to the BCS game will the first for PSU. Congratulations, JoePa!

It took awhile for me to get these pictures off of my phone and into Flickr, but JP and Lea Anne invited us on the 12th to Join them in JMP Media’s suite to watch the Chiefs (Cubs farm team) battle the Quad Cities Swing (Cardinals farm team). We had an awesome time, and it was really nice to hang out with JP’s family. We always have a good time when we get together.

Plus, the Chiefs rolled over the Swing.

In a weird twist, it was Albert Pujols bobble head night, so Josh: expect a USPS package on its way.

A little pessimism injection

Filed under: Cubs, Sports — mattandrhya @ 6:03 am

Read on the Cub Reporter today:

After today’s action:

Good (true .600 team) and lucky (1 %ile probability): finish 32-9 for 91-71, can be tied by:

Houston or Philadelphia 27-15
Washington 28-15
Florida 29-14
New York 30-13

That scenario, in English, is what’ll happen if the Cubs play like a 97-win team from here on out and get a large amount of the breaks. That’s a lot to ask on both counts. More realistic is:

Kinda good (true .550 team) and kinda lucky (10 %ile probability): finish 27-14 for 86-76, can be tied by:

Houston or Philadelphia 22-20
Washington 23-20
Florida 24-19
New York 25-18

Today’s games, with the teams above us winning and losing in equal numbers, illustrates the problem. At least one of those teams in the second scenario is all but guaranteed to beat their mark, while there’s a pretty big chance the Cubs won’t even do that well.

Echoing Crunch, the Cubs more or less sealed their fate with the ATL dive. They need to play ridiculously well and get all the breaks in their games and hope that nobody else catches fire. I’d like to hope too, but this is going to be over sooner rather than later, in spite of the inspired play they’ve shown recently.

This is an excellent breakdown, and it shows just how lucky the Cubs would need to be to make the postseason. Doesn’t seem likely.

Cubs, Bears, and Illini (football)…It’s a long time before college basketball…

We were supposed to be healthy this year

Filed under: Bears, Sports — mattandrhya @ 8:07 am

So, if any of you don’t know, Rex Grossman broke his ankle, and will be out for this season. Basically, this puts the Bears back into the position that they’ve been in for years – trying to play catch up at the quarterback position.

Between the Bears and the Illini, at least I won’t be disappointed late in their seasons like I am with the Cubs. Talk about depressing.

Gmap Pedometer

Filed under: matt, Sports, Tech — mattandrhya @ 5:32 am

One of the coolest google map hacks that I’ve come across so far is the Gmaps Pedometer. Basically, it is a way for you to create routes on Google Maps and figure out the distances of those routes. It is great to figure out how far of a walk something is, or to create a route of a certain length (I created a 1 mile running route). Also, you can switch between the maps and satellite images to see what the route looks like. Here is my favorite running path, or my Mom’s favorite walking path.

You must build the iron before you pump it.

As I had mentioned in a previous post, Rhya and I had set out on a couple little projects. Rhya gathered up a bunch of stuff and took it to her parents’ house to take part in the Bloom Family Garage Sale. I’m happy to report she raked in over $300 to put towards a rocking chair! Good Stuff.

I, on the other hand, had the daunting task of turning one of our basement rooms into a weightroom. It was a long two weeks, seriously. I ‘ve captured it in pictures.
Weider c670 in the Weightroom
Now, let me talk about the Weider c670 for a second, a sort of mini-review. In the short time that I’ve had it, I’m pretty impressed. I feel like I can sling the weights around on it without being too careful, and everything feels like it is solid and well-manufactured. Except, that is, for the bench. The backrest on the bench wobbles, because the adjustable portion of it doesn’t fit into a tight sleeve. I find that absolutely unacceptable. I’m in no way going to trust it to give me solid support when I’m lifting heavy weights. I’m either going to find a way to fix it, or use the bench that I already have (which is funny…it is a weider product, and probably cheaper, but rock solid).

Other than that, I’m definitely impressed. the cables work well on the lat machine and pec deck, and the extensions to the bench (leg extension and preacher curl) are very easy to put on. I’ll post an update to the pictures when I get the room finished (still need to hang some pictures — think Cubs, Testosterone, and Sigma Chi) and an update to the post when I’ve used it for awhile.

March Madness

Filed under: matt, Sports — mattandrhya @ 8:35 am

It’s that time of year again. The time of year that makes me wish I had a tiny tv in my cubicle to watch the NCAA Tourney. The time of year where I basically burn money and come in middle of the pack in some pools (play money of course. NCAA Pools are illegal). So, I joined a pool with a bunch of poker players. It might not be my smartest move, as I have a sneaking suspicion that a lot of these guys are heavy in the sports betting as well. Oh well, may Illinois turn it up to 11. For those interested, here is my bracket for rec.gambling.poker and my bracket against Harlin heads up. Good luck to all of you, unless you have Illinois losing.

Clock Management

Filed under: Sports — mattandrhya @ 3:22 pm
  1. TO was money.
  2. Freddie Mitchell was MIA.
  3. D McNabb was seriously nervous (floating balls, underthrowing, etc.)
  4. Andy Reid has no concept of clock management. Honestly, they lollygagged all through the 4th quarter. That falls on the coach
  5. Most of the commercials sucked. Exceptions: Jumping out of the airplane for Bud and the cat doused in spaghetti.

It’s been awhile (Since the Titans game?) since the game was good and commercials were bad.
